The Divine Light of Litha - The Summer Solstice

June 18, 2019

This is the time of the Sun God, as he bares his naked chest upon us, the light of his heart blinding. This is the point when we become so wrapped up in his light that the day itself seems extended, all so we can remain held as long as possible in his passionate embrace. This is Litha, also known as Midsummer and the Summer Solstice.

We dance around the fires and stare deeply into the dancing flame of an inscribed candle. The cauldron holds yarrow, vervain, fern, st.johns wort, and rose petals… The moist leaves of the morning are brushed clean of the sweet dew to be blessed on the altar as holy water. We honor the sacred elements.

We honor love, marriage and divination at this time as well as the blessing of wealth that is our own power to invoke change in ourselves and in our lives. We celebrate the Horned God, the sacred divine masculine energy in its raw, primal and sensual warrior energy. He is the beloved of the Goddess, their marriage has grown since Beltane, matured and ready to wholly embody the divine creative energy.

We celebrate the Mother Goddess, as she has developed into a strong, unshakable force from her time as Maiden. She is ready to be a pillar of strength, to nurture and birth new life into the world. She is the ultimate expression of creativity in motion, the power to love with such incredible devotion. We nurture our own cycles of rebirth now and give life to our dreams as they take form in reality. We thank our beloved Mother Earth for all of the fruits of her abundance and her magnificent power to nurture unconditionally.

“This is the time of the rose, blossom and thorn, fragrance and blood. Now on this longest day, light triumphs, and yet begins the decline into dark. The Sun King grown embraces the Queen of Summer in the love that is death because it is so complete that all dissolves into the single song of ecstasy that moves the worlds. So the Lord of Light dies to Himself, and sets sail across the dark seas of time, searching for the isle of light that is rebirth. We turn the Wheel and share his fate, for we have planted the seeds of our own changes, and to grow we must accept even the passing of the sun.” (Starhawk)

As we meet the longest day of light, we acknowledge the transition, or descent back into its opposite. As each coming day will bring with it an extra hint of darkness, and so we too descend deeper into the depths of our inner world in a state of constant discovery and revelation. We aspire towards our greatest selves.

We celebrate love in all of its expressions, the love of the light and the love of the dark. The love of the cycles and the journey. The love of the passionate kiss of the Sun God and the love of letting him go. The love that exists in the sacred marriage of our inner masculine and feminine in its matured state, giving form to our Magick from a place of balance and harmony. The devotional love of the Mother Goddess to the divine child. The love of the self as it changes and evolves into its highest expression.

This is a time of joy, active passionate expression, creativity and stepping fearlessly into our truth. It is a time of courage, adventure, boldness, bravery. Enlivening the inner lion and lioness, we rawr with a ferocious excitement driven by the intense wonder of the Great Mystery.

Blessed Litha everyone!
